Wine tourism on the Costa Dorada
The Romans left an important cultural legacy in these lands – the cultivation of the vine and wine making. This tradition continues today and still defines the landscape and a major part of the Costa Daurada’s economy.
DESIGNATIONS OF ORIGIN OF THE COSTA DAURADA
Hundred-year-old vines and cooperative wineries from the Modernist period designed by architects such as César Martinell (six of them categorised as Assets of Cultural Interest) can be seen in the wine-producing counties of the province of Tarragona. There are six Designations of Origin: Priorat, Montsant, Tarragona, Conca de Barberà, Terra Alta and Penedès, the last of these shared with the county of Alt Penedès in Barcelona province. Among the Modernist wineries, those of Pinell de Brai and Cornudella de Montsant stand out for their exceptional beauty.
The vineyards of these DO regions give the province of Tarragona it characteristic agricultural landscape and have been a key element in the local economy since time immemorial.
The diverse grape varieties, the climatic and soil differences and the various cultivation methods allow these lands to produce a considerable variety of high quality wines.
